Kentucky wineries capture 15 gold medalsLOUISVILLE, Ky. — Nine Kentucky wineries earned 15 gold medals at the Kentucky State Fair wine competition in August in Louisville. Millanova Winery of Mt. Washington, Purple Toad Winery of Paducah and Wight-Meyer Vineyard and Winery of Shepherdsville each earned three gold medals. Millanova won with its Sweet Falls of Niagara, Chase’s Red and Walnut Ridge wines. Purple Toad’s gold-winning wines were its Merlot, Chardonnay Peach and Lauren’s Blackberry. Wight-Meyer struck gold with its Chambourcin, Norton Reserve and Winter Solstice. Other gold medal winners were Brooks Hill Winery of Brooks (Chambourcin), Lovers Leap Vineyards and Winery of Lawrenceburg (Riesling), Rock Springs Winery and Vineyard of Grayson (Catabwa Blush), Riverbend Winery of Louisville (Rockin Rose), StoneBrook Winery of Camp Springs (Raspberry), and Ruby Moon Vineyard and Winery of Henderson (Razzle Dazzle Raspberry). A total of 15 Kentucky wineries submitted 113 entries. Entries had to have at least 75 percent Kentucky juice to be eligible. Ten judges assessed the wines in a blind tasting.
