Finally, it’s spring, and after a long, hard winter, Kentuckians are ready to get outside. Why not take the family on a visit to a farm destination? More than 325 Kentucky farms are open to visitors.

You can enjoy a wide variety of activities at a Kentucky farm destination. You can go on a trail ride, take a hayride or go down a slide. You can get your hands dirty. You can pick farm-fresh fruits and vegetables. You can take in a concert while you sample some of Kentucky’s award-winning wines. You can even stay the night and awaken to a pastoral farm scene and the smell of a hearty breakfast on the stove.

When you visit a Kentucky farm destination, you help Kentucky farmers earn a living. The most recent Census of Agriculture said that agritourism generated some $3.2 million in farm income in Kentucky in 2007.

Farm destinations appeal to people looking for some fresh air, relaxation and clean family fun. They’ve also become increasingly popular as family budgets have been stretched and travelers increasingly are looking for things to do that are closer to home. Most people now are two, three or more generations removed from the farm, so a visit to a farm destination helps rebuild that connection. It also develops a greater appreciation for the men and women who produce the food and fiber we all depend on.
