FRANKFORT, Ky. — Following is a statement from Bill Clary, director of public relations for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, regarding the United States Department of Agriculture’s announcement today of an inconclusive test for bovine spongiform encephalopathy in the United States:
“The inconclusive result does not mean that the USDA has found a case of BSE in this country. Inconclusive results are a normal component of screening tests, which are designed to be extremely sensitive so they will detect any sample that could possibly be positive. So far this year, there have been two other occasions when such results were reported. In neither case did the animal in question have BSE. It is important to note that the animal tested was not in the U.S. food or feed supply. Although it is impossible for anyone outside USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to know where the animal that is the subject of today’s announcement came from, we have no reason to believe that it came from Kentucky. We await further test results, which will be available within four to seven days; we will continue to monitor the situation.”
