"[The Sweet Sixteen] is a special opportunity to get the Kentucky Proud brand in front of thousands of people from all over the state."

Commissioner Richie Farmer

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer has announced that the Kentucky Department of Agriculture will co-sponsor the National City/KHSAA Sweet Sixteen boys basketball tournament for the third consecutive year. The 2006 edition is scheduled for March 15-18 in Lexington’s Rupp Arena.

“The boys Sweet Sixteen obviously is a special time for me,” Commissioner Farmer said. “But as Commissioner of Agriculture, I also see that it is a special opportunity to get the Kentucky Proud brand in front of thousands of people from all over the state. If more people look for Kentucky Proud, they will discover all the great farm products that are produced right here at home.”

During the tournament, the Department will launch a Kentucky Proud marketing campaign featuring University of Kentucky men’s basketball coach Tubby Smith and University of Louisville men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino. The coaches will appear in print and broadcast advertisements for Kentucky Proud products.

“I am thrilled to have Coach Smith and Coach Pitino on board for Kentucky Proud,” Commissioner Farmer said. “These two gentlemen are well-known and respected throughout the Commonwealth. Their presence will really help to raise awareness of Kentucky Proud.”

Kentucky Proud is the Department’s marketing program to promote farm products raised or produced in Kentucky. Members of the program include dozens of producers and several retailers such as Kroger throughout Kentucky; Slone’s Signature Markets in Lexington and Morehead; E.W. James and Sons in Lexington and Richmond; Doll’s, Paul’s and A Taste of Kentucky in Louisville, and Remke Markets in northern Kentucky. Consumers can find Kentucky Proud products by looking for the familiar red, white and green logo in grocery stores, specialty stores, farmers’ markets, restaurants and other businesses where fine Kentucky products are sold.

For more information about Kentucky Proud, go to www.kyproud.com; call the Department’s marketing office at (502) 564-4983, or visit the Kentucky Proud booth in Rupp Arena during the National City/KHSAA Sweet Sixteen.
