COMMISSIONER FARMER HONORS WINNERS OF POSTER AND ESSAY CONTEST

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer presented awards to winners of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Poster and Essay Contest at the annual Kentucky Agriculture Day luncheon March 22 at the Thomas D. Clark History Center in Frankfort.

“I want to congratulate all the boys and girls whose posters and essays were judged the best in the Commonwealth,” Commissioner Farmer said. “I also want to thank all the children who entered the contest, as well as their teachers and parents. We had a record number of entries this year, and the number and quality of the entries give me hope that Kentucky agriculture has a bright future.”

Contestants created posters and essays based on the theme “Kentucky Agriculture: Growing for the Future.” Winners of each contest in each grade were awarded $100 savings bonds. This year the KDA added Kentucky Proud awards for the best overall poster and best overall essay. The classrooms that produced the Kentucky Proud winners each received $500.

The poster winners in each grade, with their schools and teachers, were:

First grade – Dashawn Smith, Walker Elementary, Monticello, Vicky Foster

Second grade – Travis Dale Perdue, Col. William Casey Elementary, Columbia, Shirley Morrison

Third grade – Cole Boswell, Utica Elementary, Utica, Cinda Cockrum

Fourth grade – Colton Igleheart, Utica Elementary, Utica, Cinda Cockrum

Fifth grade – Daniel Yeiser, Utica Elementary, Utica, Marsha Bivens (Kentucky Proud winner)

Sixth grade – Taylor Dye, Owsley County Elementary, Booneville, Rhonda Becknell

Seventh grade – Chesika Crump, University Heights Academy, Hopkinsville, Tracie Atwood

Eighth grade – Benjamin Harper II, Franklin-Simpson Middle School, Franklin, Melissa Willett 

The essay winners in each grade, with their schools and teachers, were:

First grade – Carrie Ann Followell, Glasscock Elementary School, Lebanon, Ara Tungate

Second grade – Becky Ito, Glasscock Elementary School, Lebanon, Ara Tungate

Third grade – Lianna Spurrier, Chenoweth Elementary, Louisville, Darlene Horton

Fourth grade – Kacie Leachman, Utica Elementary, Utica, Jennifer Hayden

Fifth grade – Zack Allen, Providence Elementary, Winchester, Shannon McCord

Sixth grade – Zachary Hackworth, Louisa Middle School, Louisa, Kemra VanHoose (Kentucky Proud winner)

Seventh grade – Jessie Mamoth, University Heights Academy, Hopkinsville, Tracie Atwood

Eighth grade – Scott Holston, St. Nicholas Academy, Louisville, Steve Finch

“I was pleased to meet these young people,” Commissioner Farmer said. “They are bright, talented, curious and hopeful for the future.”

The winning posters and essays will be used in a KDA calendar and in various Department publications and special events.
