FRANKFORT, Ky. — Gil Logan wants his guests at the May 6 Kentucky Derby to “Eat Kentucky.”
Churchill Downs’ executive chef adopted that as his slogan for the 132nd running of the greatest two minutes in sports. Logan once again will serve a broad array of Kentucky Proud foods to guests from around the globe who will gather for the classic thoroughbred race.
“Gil Logan is the No. 1 promoter of Kentucky Proud,” Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer said. “He has introduced the great tastes of Kentucky Proud foods to people from all over the world plus a global television audience. We can’t say enough about what Gil Logan has meant to the success of Kentucky Proud.”
“We want to show how proud we are of our food in this state,” Logan said.
New to the Kentucky Proud lineup at this year’s Derby will be one-of-a-kind bourbon cheese from Mooney’s Pickle Dip of Louisville. The Ruth Hunt Candy Co. of Mount Sterling again will create its unique chocolate spires in the form of the signature twin spires at Churchill Downs.
Logan also will serve cheese from Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese of Austin, country ham from Finchville Farms, mushrooms from Washington County producer Mark Wheatley, jams and jellies from WindStone Farms of Paris, coffee and iced tea from john conti coffee of Louisville, sauces from Pop’s Pepper Patch of Louisville, ice cream from Valentine’s Ice Cream of Winchester, pork and sausages from John Medley’s Kentucky Heritage Meats in Springfield, and assorted sweets from Desserts by Helen of Louisville.
