FRANKFORT, Ky. — Small farmers can tour agricultural sites, hear inspiring success stories, find out about risk management, get information on pending legislation and more at the Kentucky Small Farmers Conference Nov. 14-16 in Frankfort.
The recipient of the Kentucky Small Farmer of the Year award will be announced in a banquet Nov. 15 at the Capital Plaza Hotel.
State Veterinarian Robert C. Stout and Tim Turney, director of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Division of Producer Services, will talk about required certificates and identifications for animals in intrastate, interstate and international trade. Sue Billings, director of the KDA’s Division of Animal Health, will speak on animal and premises registration. Other scheduled speakers include Carol House, chairperson of the National Agricultural Statistics Board; Pat Haragan of the Olmsted Parks Conservancy in Louisville; John Pierre, vice chancellor of the Southern University Agricultural Law Center; Louie Rivers III of the National Science Foundation; Samuel Scott of the North-South Institute of Davie, Fla., and Holly Hopper of the University of Kentucky.
Representatives of the KDA, Kentucky State University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Governor’s Office of Agricultural Policy, the Risk Management Agency, Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education, and the Natural Resource Conservation Service will lead sessions at KSU and the Capital Plaza Hotel. Participants will tour the University of Kentucky Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center and the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington and Purnell’s Sausage in Simpsonville.
The KDA will offer hay testing Nov. 16 for participants who bring samples.
Registration is $25. Lodging and meals will be covered for those who register by Oct. 20. An optional flu shot is an additional $15.
The conference is sponsored by Kentucky State University.
