check to Jeff Power of the Kentucky Poultry Federation. |
The
Kentucky Department of Agriculture grant will allow
the federation to conduct workshops to help producers
meet new federal environmental regulations.
“The
Department is committed to protecting the environment
of the Commonwealth,” Commissioner Farmer said. “Our
poultry producers want to be good neighbors and good
stewards of the environment. The workshops will provide
them with the information they need to do that.”
Kentucky's
poultry industry has grown dramatically in recent years.
The value of broilers produced in Kentucky has risen
from $1.9 million in 1990 to a peak of $504 million
in 2001. The Commonwealth was eighth in the United States
with a state-record 269.9 million broilers in 2002,
the last year for which statistics are available. Cash
receipts for all poultry in 2002 totaled $505.9 million,
ranking second among agricultural commodities behind
only horses and stud fees.
