FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky schoolchildren visit farms to eat good food, pet the livestock and, well, play in the dirt. At the same time, they make discoveries about science, technology and agriculture’s importance in their everyday lives. Kentucky farmers who open their homes to visitors can learn ways to enrich a child’s farm experience in a seminar scheduled later this month.
The Kentucky Department of Agriculture will host “Agritourism: Planning Your School Visit” July 19 from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. EDT at the Pritchard Community Center in Elizabethtown. Speakers will include Scotty Lee of Lee’s Garden Center in Hodgenville; Ruth Ann Sweazy, a teacher at Taylorsville Elementary School; Pam Burns, principal of Utica Elementary School, and Jane Eller of the Kentucky Environmental Education Council.
A registration form and $10 fee are due to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture by July 14. The fee covers registration and lunch. Checks should be written to Kentucky State Treasurer.
For more information or to obtain a registration form, contact Kelly Ludwig, director of the Kentucky Office of Agritourism, at (502) 564-4983 or kelly.ludwig@ky.gov.
