"... many farmers in the Gulf Coast are still struggling ... "

Commissioner Richie Farmer

FRANKFORT, Ky. — David Neville is looking for a few good bulls to donate to cattle farmers on the Gulf Coast.

The Shelby County farmer plans to leave Friday with 20 bulls bound for the Louisiana State University experiment station in Amite, La. Neville had 10 bulls donated by last weekend and is looking for 10 more.

“David Neville’s generosity and kindness are commendable,” Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer said. “I appreciate the good works of Mr. Neville and all Kentuckians who have given so generously to the hurricane victims. At this one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we should all remember that many farmers in the Gulf Coast are still struggling and will need help if they are to stay in farming.”

“This is a way to help someone without writing a check and wondering where the money went,” Neville said.

A driver is donating his services and his truck to deliver the bulls from Tri County Livestock in Henry County to Amite. The bulls will be taken from there to individual farms.

Neville is getting help from the Fellowship of Christian Farmers International, of which Oldham County farmer John Adams is the national rapid response coordinator. Adams is putting together a shipment of hay from Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana to livestock farms on the Gulf Coast.

The region was inundated with salt water because of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. As a result, vegetation has not been able to grow in much of the area. The Gulf Coast has suffered from drought conditions since the hurricanes of a year ago.

“These guys are not going to have a chance to bale any hay,” said Adams, who went to the Gulf Coast as a Red Cross volunteer in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He plans to return this week to assess the situation.

“There is a massive need for feedstuffs, hay, barns and fencing that the press doesn’t talk about because it’s on the backroads,” Neville said.

To contact Neville about donating a bull, call (502) 330-3027 or (502) 461-7270 or e-mail dneville@neville.net. For more information about the Fellowship of Christian Farmers International, call Adams at (502) 241-4122.
