Frankfort
, KY– Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer announced
today the Kentucky Department of Agriculture will help
feed some of the state's hungry children through a $3,500
commitment to Dare to Care Food Bank's Kids Cafés
.
Rodger
Bingham, star of the CBS reality series “Survivor,”
will appear on behalf of the Department between 5 and
6 p.m. EST Tuesday, March 16, at the Kids Café
at Dismas Charities St. Ann at 1515 Algonquin Parkway
in Louisville , one of 16 Kids Café sites in
that city. Bingham is Deputy Director of Marketing at
KDA. Winifred Molohon of KDA will also be present.
“This
partnership between the Dare to Care Food Bank and the
Department of Agriculture is part of a celebration of
National Agriculture Week,” said Commissioner Farmer.
“The farmers of Kentucky produce outstanding, nutritious
food every day, and there is no reason for anyone to
be hungry. Through this financial commitment, we are
trying to help with that effort.”
Kids
Cafés serve hot, nutritious meals to children
in economically challenged areas each week at no cost.
The program serves children 2,200 hot meals each week
in 13 areas across Kentucky . KDA has committed grant
funds totaling $3,500 to the project.
The
grant funds were directed to two Kentucky producers,
so farmers also benefit from the partnership, Commissioner
Farmer said.
Happy
Hollow Farms in Springfield is part of the nine-member
Central Kentucky Hog Marketing Cooperative. It received
about half of the $3,500 to supply pork products to
Kids Cafés. The remainder of the funds went to
supplier Kentucky Premium Beef in Marion , which buys
feeder cattle from producers all across the state.
