FRANKFORT, Ky. — Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer today complimented the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for its increased use of biodiesel in its vehicles.
“Biodiesel provides a new market for soybean farmers,” Commissioner Farmer said. “It also reduces the amount of emissions from diesel engines. I commend the Transportation Cabinet for expanding its use of this clean, renewable fuel.”
The Transportation Cabinet recently announced that it used 49,668 gallons of biodiesel in October, more than double the amount of the previous month.
The Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Mobile Science Activity Center uses biodiesel where it is available in its travels to schools across the Commonwealth. The Mobile Science Activity Center is a 42-foot-long trailer with 10 workstations to provide opportunities for students to conduct investigations about agriculture and the environment.
Biodiesel is made from soybeans and recycled vegetable oil. It is blended with petroleum diesel. No alterations are necessary for a diesel engine to use biodiesel fuel. Biodiesel is available at more than 80 locations in Kentucky, according to the Kentucky Clean Fuels Coalition.
Commissioner Farmer supports increasing the use of biofuels, including biodiesel and ethanol, in Kentucky as a way to help family farmers, protect the environment and reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign sources of energy.
