LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sale prices and the quality
of cattle were at an all-time high April 8-10 as the
Kentucky Department of Agriculture co-sponsored the
42nd annual Kentucky National Shows and Sales at the
Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center.
A total of 265 head of dairy cattle sold for more than
$675,000, up $175,000 over last year’s total sales.
“Dairy farmers from across the nation are recognizing
the quality of Kentucky’s cattle,” said
Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer. “This
annual show presents an opportunity to improve the genetics
of their herds while seeing how their livestock compares
with some of the best.”
Commissioner Farmer spoke to all five breed associations
April 8, presenting each organization with $4,000 on
behalf of the KDA. The combined $20,000 was used as
premium monies for the shows.
Totals and averages for the five dairy breeds at the
sales were:
· Ayrshire: $51,725, total; $1,176, average per
head;
· Brown Swiss: $125,250, total; $2,557, average
per head;

head;
· Holstein: $240,185, total; $3,365, average
per head;
· Jersey: $198,325, total; $2,280, average per

“This was one of our most successful shows ever,
and the producers who were here looking for genetics
for breeding stock had the opportunity to view some
of the best animals I have ever seen,” said Steve
Mobley, director of KDA’s Division of Show and
Fair Promotion.
Other event sponsors were the Kentucky Ayrshire Club,
the Kentucky Brown Swiss Breeders’ Association,
the Kentucky Guernsey Breeders’ Association, the
Kentucky Holstein Cattle Club and the Kentucky Jersey
