FRANKFORT,
Ky. — The Pride of Kentucky Showcase will show visitors
where they can find great Kentucky recipes and exciting
destinations where they can learn about Kentucky farm
life and traditions.
The
Showcase will take place Sept.
16 from 2-8 p.m. CDT at the Carroll Knicely Conference
Center in Bowling Green. It will highlight Agritourism
Month in Kentucky, proclaimed by Governor Ernie Fletcher
for the month of September.
“Agritourism is helping Kentucky farmers boost their
farm income,” Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer
said. “Destinations like Chaney's Dairy Barn in Bowling
Green, Double Stink Hog Farm in Georgetown, Buffalo
Crossing in Shelbyville and many others have become
regular stops for tourists looking for places to go
out in the country. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture
is pleased to play a part in the Pride of Kentucky Showcase.”
The
Showcase will introduce Cave Region Agritourism, a Bowling
Green-based organization that plans and implements programs
to benefit farmers by the promotion of agritourism operations.
Agritourism operations from other parts of the state
also will be featured.
Special
“Fun on the Farm” activities for children will demonstrate
activities that are available at Kentucky agritourism
destinations. They include making ice cream, hayrides,
“Diggin' in the Dirt,” a petting zoo, pony rides, “Cowboy
UP!” and others.
The
“Pride of Kentucky” cookbook will be reintroduced at
the Showcase. It was published in 2003 by the Kentucky
Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences
and was unveiled at the 2003 Kentucky State Fair. The
Kentucky Department of Agriculture has helped market
the book. The cookbooks will be featured in stage demonstrations
promoting Kentucky Proud food products. They are available
for purchase from local Extension offices.
Proceeds
from book sales go to an educational endowment fund
for scholarships and an awards program to recognize
excellence in education.
The
Showcase is sponsored by the University of Kentucky
Cooperative Extension Service, West Kentucky Corporation,
Kentucky Farm Bureau, Cave Region Agritourism Inc. and
the Agritourism Advisory Council.
