FRANKFORT, Ky. — There is no significant risk of soybean rust in Kentucky that would warrant applying any of the fungicides that have been granted emergency use labels for soybean rust management in the state at this time, said Don Hershman, plant pathologist with the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture.
“So far this season, the soybean rust risk for the state of Kentucky has been very low,” Hershman said. “As a result, there has not been a time this summer when it has been appropriate to use a Section 18 [emergency] fungicide for soybean rust management.”
Using an emergency-label fungicide for soybean rust management under current conditions is not illegal but is inconsistent with the intent of the label, Hershman said.
It is appropriate to use a product granted emergency status (called Section 18) only when the specific approved emergency situation exists, according to Hershman. Soybean rust has not been identified in Kentucky this year.
The Kentucky Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with UK and the United States Environmental Protection Agency, has granted Section 18 status for 12 fungicides for use against soybean rust for the 2006 growing year. Fungicides granted Section 18 status include Bumper, Domark, Folicur, Headline SBR, Orius, Propimax, Quilt, Stratego, Tilt and Uppercut. Others are in the process of receiving Section 18 status.
Hershman said many of the products granted Section 18 approval for soybean rust belong in a category of products that are highly effective against soybean rust but frequently are inferior to other fungicides in controlling most common late-season soybean diseases.
