FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky Proud broccoli will be available in 33 Wal-Mart SuperCenters in Kentucky by the end of the week, officials of Wal-Mart and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture have announced.
The broccoli is being shipped from the West Kentucky Growers Cooperative in Owensboro to the Kentucky Wal-Marts. It could arrive as early as mid-week and will remain available as long as the supply lasts.
“This partnership between Wal-Mart and the West Kentucky Growers Cooperative will provide a big boost to Kentucky growers,” Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer said. “It’s also good for consumers who will be able to buy the freshest, most nutritious broccoli available. This successful partnership opens up exciting possibilities for the future.”
Mann Packing will ship an initial order of 340 cases of bunch broccoli (about 40 pounds per case) and 35 cases of broccoli crowns (about 20 pounds per case) to Wal-Mart’s London distribution center, where it will be shipped to Kentucky SuperCenters. Mann will ship 350-500 cases per week until the supply is exhausted.
The West Kentucky Growers Cooperative markets broccoli, bell peppers, specialty peppers, cabbage, corn, cucumbers, potatoes, pumpkins, squash and tomatoes for farmers in Kentucky and southern Indiana. The processing plant has the capacity to cool 20,000 crates of product per day. The co-op was established in 2000.
