"If you want to know what Kentucky Proud tastes like, this is where you start."

Commissioner Richie Farmer

LOUISVILLE – Deep-fried candy bars and pastries are fads of the moment at the Kentucky State Fair, but when it comes to enduring crowd-pleasers, seasoned fairgoers know to head for the Great Kentucky Cookout Tent.

Sponsored by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, the tent showcases Kentucky Proud foods to appreciative hungry fair patrons.

“If you want to know what Kentucky Proud tastes like, this is where you start,” Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer said.  Servers at the Cookout Tent booths are affiliated with statewide associations promoting aquaculture, beef, corn, dairy, country ham, pork, poultry and sheep.

The tent is set up each year in the heart of the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center, near the junction of the fair’s West Wing agricultural headquarters, the Midway, and Broadbent Arena.

Various sandwich meats are among the featured foods. Fairgoers can choose among ribeye steaks, pork chops, chicken, lamb, trout, catfish or country ham for a quick and hearty sandwich meal. Corn on the cob and ice cream are also served from their associations’ booths.

This year the tent is offering food for thought in the form of flat-screen monitors at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association stand that show waiting customers the story of the Kentucky cattle industry.

Dave Maples, KCA executive vice president, said the show presents the history of Kentucky cattle and photos of winners of this year’s youth livestock competitions. The young champions competed in livestock expositions throughout Kentucky in the months leading up to the state fair.

Growers and producers of Kentucky agricultural products can market their wares with the “Kentucky Proud” logo signifying their Bluegrass State origins. For information on how farmers, food producers, restaurants, and other businesses can join the Kentucky Proud program and share in its marketing advantages, visit www.kyproud.com or call KDA’s agriculture marketing office at (502) 564-4893.
