FRANKFORT, Ky. — Two free organic workshops are scheduled for next week in Kentucky.
The workshops are Sept. 20 at the University of Kentucky South Farm at the corner of Man o’ War and Nicholasville roads in Lexington and Sept. 21 at the Fairview Produce Auction on U.S. 68/80 in Christian County. Each workshop will be 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. local time.
The workshops will offer information on organic animal herd health, vegetable production and grain production. Speakers will include Dr. Paul Dettloff of the Organic Valley Cooperative in La Farge, Wisc., author of “Alternative Treatments for Ruminant Animals”; Gene Prochaska, an organic grain inspector from Indiana, and Dr. Michael Bomford of Kentucky State University. Jake Schmitz, organic program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, will be on hand to help attendees with organic certification issues and give an update on the KDA’s organic program.
The workshops will be conducted by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and ATTRA, the National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service.
The public is invited. The workshops are targeted to organic farmers, farmers interested in making the transition to organic agriculture, agriculture professionals, teachers and college students. A light lunch will be provided.
