“The Department’s Farm and Home Safety Program strives to inform the public about the dangers of farm work and ways that farmers can reduce their risks,” said Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer. “We encourage everyone to enjoy Kentucky farm life but stay safe doing it.”
The KDA’s one-of-a-kind tractor rollover simulator will be on display in the West Hall. This display illustrates what happens with and without a rollover protective structure in the event of a tractor rollover. An all-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety display also will be in the West Hall.
A grain bin safety display will be in the South Wing. Miniature versions of a grain bin, grain wagon, augers and other equipment found on a grain farm are mounted on a 28-foot gooseneck trailer.
KDA and state fire and rescue personnel will be on hand at each of the displays for questions and discussions.
Agriculture-related deaths in Kentucky have fallen from 50 in 1995 to 24 in 2003, the last year for which records are available. ATV deaths in Kentucky have risen from three in 1984 to approximately 40 in 2004.
