FRANKFORT, Ky. — Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer was elected secretary of the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture (SASDA) at the conclusion of its annual conference June 5-8 in Key Largo, Fla.
“I am honored by the confidence my peers have shown in me,” Commissioner Farmer said. “We in the SASDA states and territories all face the same question: How do we use limited resources to protect and serve the taxpayers of the region in the areas of biosecurity, trade, improving rural income and building new markets? I’m convinced that, by working together as a team, we can make real progress toward improving the lives of all our citizens, in Kentucky and throughout the region.”
Commissioner Farmer succeeds Ken Givens, Tennessee’s commissioner of agriculture. Givens was elected vice president, Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin was re-elected treasurer, and Alabama Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks was selected to serve as president. All were elected to one-year terms.
SASDA includes agriculture departments from 15 southeastern states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. SASDA is one of four regional associations of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA), which consists of the secretaries, commissioners and directors of agriculture in all 50 states and four U.S. territories. NASDA’s mission is to represent the state departments of agriculture in the development, implementation and communication of sound public policy and programs that support the American agriculture industry while protecting consumers and the environment.
