FRANKFORT, Ky. — Louisville will play host to the American Beekeeping Federation’s 63rd annual convention Jan. 11-14 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
More than 60 experts from throughout the country will lead workshops at the convention. Gene Killion, a retired apiarist for the University of Illinois and the Illinois Department of Agriculture, will give the keynote address Jan. 11. Members of the Kentuckiana Beekeepers Association in the Louisville area will help with the convention.
Some 30 large beekeeping suppliers from through the United States and overseas will display at the convention. The American Honey Show also will take place during the event. A free “Kids and Bees” program will be held at the Louisville Free Public Library on Jan. 14. The convention will be preceded by an optional tour of the Walter T. Kelly Co. in Clarkson on Jan. 10.
Members of all Kentucky and Indiana beekeepers associations may register at the advance rate for ABF members, even if they register at the door. The rate is $145 for one person and $90 for additional persons.
A “Serious Sideliner Symposium” for beekeepers who operate fewer than 300 colonies but are no longer hobbyists will run concurrently with the ABF convention program on Jan. 13-14. The symposium is intended to help small beekeepers learn new efficiencies, expand product offerings (such as specialty honeys and beeswax items), and offer new services (such as pollination and bee removal). Dr. Larry Connor of Wicwas Press, New Haven Conn., will coordinate the symposium. The fee for the symposium is $95 for both days or $60 for one day, which includes admission to the ABF Trade Show and coffee breaks.
