FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Northern Kentucky Regional Farmers’ Market will begin its first year of operation on April 26.
Based in Covington, the tailgate market will be open to producers in 11 counties – Boone, Bracken, Campbell, Carroll, Gallatin, Grant, Kenton, Mason, Owen, Pendleton and Robertson.
“All Kentucky-produced, all Kentucky Proud is our focus,” said Larry Maxey, the chairperson of the NKRFM Board of Directors.
During the spring, items offered will include cut flowers, early vegetables and crafts. Later in the summer, the market will offer more fruits and vegetables, and in the fall, pumpkins and gourds will be the focus. One vendor plans to sell meat.
“We know that success for this market will depend on having a broad variety of goods for our buyers and our ability to keep things changing,” said Maxey. “Hopefully, this will draw people in and keep them coming back.”
The board also plans to attract people to the market with exciting community events. One event will feature cooking demonstrations that will enable children in the community to interact with the growers and their goods. “We understand the importance of making the connection between the residents of our communities and the farmers,” said Maxey.
So far about 30 producers have signed up, and more are encouraged to come on board, said Maxey. “We hope that the market will continue to grow throughout the summer, and we have a tremendously positive attitude,” he said. The market is located on the corner of 7th Street and Scott Street in downtown Covington. Hours are Tuesday from 3-7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. For more information on the Northern Kentucky Regional Farmers’ Market, contact Andie Bernard at (859) 392-3134.
