FRANKFORT, Ky. — The happy face of a child at a petting zoo won the West Kentucky Corp.’s 2004 Kentucky Agritourism Photo Contest for Cheryl Allen of Shelbyville.
The contest prize winners were recognized at the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board’s annual meeting Jan. 20 in Lexington. Rodger Bingham, deputy director of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Office of Agriculture Marketing and Product Promotion, and Kristen Branscum, Tourism Development Manager for the Kentucky Department of Tourism, presented the awards.
The winning photo of a child at the petting zoo at Buffalo Crossing in Shelby County was judged to best exemplify the contest’s “Fun on the Farm” theme and earned Allen the $150 top prize. Second prize of $100 went to Lisa Gibbs Young of Bowling Green for her picture of a child selling pie pumpkins at Jackson’s Orchard in Bowling Green. A picture from the 1850 Homeplace at Land Between the Lakes, taken by Honey Harper of Gilbertsville, earned the third-place prize of $50.
“Agritourism is good for farmers and tourists alike,” Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer said. “It provides fun destinations for Kentucky families at a time when many people are looking for places to go that are closer to home. And agritourism gives farmers a way to make more money on the farm. The photo contest has helped raise awareness of the many exciting and enjoyable destinations the Commonwealth has to offer.”
Honorable mention awards went to Phyllis Alcorn, Irvine; Frances Looney, Berry; Mike Walden, Frankfort; Michael Barkley, Cynthiana; Kathy Dennison, Horse Cave; Loura T. Robinson, Maysville; Jessica Gossett, Cleburne, Texas; and Theresa Walden, Frankfort.
The contest was judged by officials of the Kentucky Institute for Economic Development and the Carroll Knicely Center in Bowling Green. The pictures will be used for agritourism promotions.
The contest was sponsored by West Kentucky Corp., the Kentucky Agritourism Advisory Council, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, the Kentucky Department of Tourism and the Commodity Growers Cooperative.
