FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Kentucky Department of Agriculture reminds growers who use products containing the corn herbicide atrazine that they are required to follow the application instructions on a supplemental atrazine label to reduce runoff into water sources.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires distributors and retailers to submit the atrazine supplemental label to end-users starting with the upcoming planting season. A stickered label is required to be affixed to the outside of atrazine containers. Manufacturers of atrazine-containing products are supplying distributors and retailers with the stickers and supplemental labels.

The EPA is allowing atrazine to be re-registered under a stricter label use and application program that can reduce runoff. The Environmental Hazard section of the atrazine label cites specific management practices involving setbacks, buffers, and maximum application rates that, when implemented properly, can reduce atrazine runoff. Uses of atrazine can be canceled in specific watersheds if the amount of atrazine in a watershed reaches a certain level.

The EPA established its re-registration rules following a 10-year study of atrazine. The agency also initiated a new watershed monitoring program.

For more information on the atrazine supplemental labeling, contact the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Technical Support Branch toll-free at 1-800-205-6543 or your local county Extension office.
