NEW YORK--Broadbent Smoked Country Sliced Pepper Bacon, made by Broadbent's B & B Foods of Trigg County, is a finalist in the 33rd annual Product Awards Competition, sponsored by the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade (NASFT). The product is among six finalists in the Outstanding Meat, Pate or Seafood category.
The final judging will take place at the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York, Sunday, July 10. Winners will be announced Monday, July 11 at the same venue.
More than 3,500 products were entered in this year's competition, considered by many in the industry to be the nation's most prestigious. Broadbent Pepper Bacon, in production since 2000, won this same category at the 2002 show.
Broadbent owner Ronny Drennan credits the Kentucky Department of Agriculture for much of the company's success in the competition. KDA partially sponsors Broadbent's participation. Drennan said, "We really appreciate their help and co-sponsorship. This is our fifth year to participate in at least one Fancy Food Show a year. These shows allow exposure to gourmet food companies all over the United States and many foreign countries," he said.
While the pepper bacon product is relatively new, Broadbent has been curing hickory bacon since its founding in 1965. It also cures country hams, and its country hams are the current state and national grand champions, having been awarded the Kentucky State Fair Grand Champion ribbon three out of the last five years.
