FRANKFORT, Ky. — Officials with the Kentucky State Veterinarian’s Office are monitoring horses at Churchill Downs while they await test results to determine whether horses stabled in three barns have been infected with equine herpesvirus, an upper respiratory and neurologic ailment.
“We are working with Churchill Downs management, horsemen, veterinarians and the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority to address the situation,” State Veterinarian Robert C. Stout said. “Our focus is on containing the virus and assisting the personnel at Churchill Downs in any way we can.”
Dr. Stout has placed three barns at Churchill Downs under quarantine. The quarantine does not affect any of the horses that are scheduled to depart Churchill for Baltimore for Saturday’s Preakness Stakes.
