FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer was named vice president of the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture (SASDA) during its annual meeting in Birmingham, Ala.
“I am honored to be elected to this distinguished position by my peers,” Commissioner Farmer said. “I look forward to working with my counterparts throughout the region and the nation on issues confronting American farmers. I will take advantage of this opportunity to help Kentucky farmers make a better living on the farm.”
Commissioner Farmer succeeds Tennessee Agriculture Commissioner Ken Givens, who was elected president of SASDA. Both will serve one-year terms.
During the meeting Commissioner Farmer and his fellow state agriculture leaders received the latest information on avian influenza from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, were updated on exciting developments in biofuels and discussed trade issues and federal agriculture policy initiatives.
SASDA includes agriculture departments from 15 southeastern states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. SASDA is one of four regional associations of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA), which consists of the secretaries, commissioners and directors of agriculture in all 50 states and four U.S. territories. NASDA’s mission is to represent the state departments of agriculture in the development, implementation and communication of sound public policy and programs that support the American agriculture industry while protecting consumers and the environment.
