We have 210 acres in southwestern Kentucky. POWELL FARMS started in 1996 with 15 acres of Alfalfa which was intended as cow/calf feed. A neighbor with horses was looking at the test results from KDA that indicated 20% protein. He bought about 400 bales and referred enough of his friends to buy the entire crop.
This launched us into the Alfalfa horse hay business. Each cutting is tested by the KDA. We expect the RFV to run from 100 to 150 and protein from 14 to 20%. Our customers range from the person with one horse who needs a few bales at a time to the horse farm and stable owners who order by the trailer load. We have pure alfalfa, alfalfa orchard grass mix, and TEFF grass in small square bales.
