GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR KENTUCKY JUNIOR LIVESTOCK EXPOS

                                                                                                                                                       

 

1. All entries must conform to the official health regulations governing the

exhibition of livestock in Kentucky. All animals exhibited in the Kentucky

Junior Livestock Expo shall be identified individually on a health certificate.

2. All goats, sheep, swine, steers and market heifers exhibited at the

Kentucky Junior Livestock Expo must be KUIP identified.

3. All animals (except for bulls) exhibited are eligible to be used in

the showmanship and judging contests.

4. The shows are open only to Kentucky youth exhibitors.

5. The shows are open to regularly enrolled 4H and FFA members engaged

in an approved livestock project. All entries must be under the

supervision of the extension agent or vocational agriculture instructor.

6. 4-H and FFA exhibitors will show together in all classes.

7. The Kentucky Junior Livestock Expo Show Committees shall have the authority

to enforce and interpret any and all rules. The committee’s decisions are final.

8. Due to space limitations, exhibitors may be asked by the Show

Committees to tighten up or share pen or bedding areas .

9. All livestock must be shown by youth, and all adults shall remain outside

the show ring. Each exhibitor must show his/her animal unless

incapacitated or has more than one entry in the class. Then, another

4-H/FFA member may show the animal.

10. Exhibitors are expected to treat their animals in a manner consistent with

good animal husbandry, and display proper sportsmanship at all times.

11. The official judge’s decisions are final.

12. Owner must furnish all feed and bedding for their animals.

13. If an exhibitor violates any of the rules and regulations of the Kentucky

Junior Livestock Expos, they will be denied the opportunity to participate

in the events, and forfeit all premiums won.

14. All animals exhibited must be the bona fide property of the exhibitor.

15. Exhibitors can show at all three Kentucky Junior Livestock Expos.

16. All KY origin animals for exhibition shall be individually identified on a certificate of veterinary inspection written within the current caledar year.  January 1 through December 31, 2008.  See general health requirements for more information.

FOR ALL KENTUCKY JUNIOR LIVESTOCK EXPOS:  MARKET ANIMAL CHECK-IN

 

Each exhibitor will be responsible for weighing and turning

in their completed weight cards for each market animal by

the time listed for all shows. Every animal is subject to a

re-weigh. Lambs and goats must be within 5 pounds above

declared show weight; hogs must be within 10 pounds above

declared show weight; steers and market heifers must be

within 50 pounds above declared show weight. This will be

strictly adhered to by the show committees.

 

JUDGING CONTEST

 

1. The judging contest will consist of individual and team competition.

2. Teams will be made up of three or four members. Only top three scores count. All

members must be 4-H from one county and FFA from one chapter.

3. A county club or group may have more than one team.

4. Individuals do not have to be members of a team to compete.

5. There will be two divisions: Junior (ages 9-13) and Senior (ages 14-21).

Ages are as of January 1, 2008.

6. Eight classes will be judged: Two swine, two sheep, two cattle, two goat.

7. Awards will be presented to teams and individuals in both divisions.

8. Junior members may serve on a senior team.

9. Senior Contestants will give three sets of reasons. Junior Contestants will

give one set of reasons and have two question classes.

10. Ties in the Senior Division will be broken by reason scores.

11. Ties in the Junior Division will be broken by question scores.

 

SKILL-A-THON CONTEST

1. Identify 10 breeds of livestock.

2. Identify 10 feedstuffs.

3. Identify 10 retail meat cuts.

4. Identify 10 pieces of equipment.

5. Place a class of hay (4 samples).

6. Place a class of retail meat cuts

(4 samples).

7. Place a class of livestock

using EPDs (4 animals)

8. Do 10 routine livestock

calculations.

9. Applied Division.

There will be two divisions: Junior (ages 9-13) and Senior (ages 14-21).

Ages are as of January 1, 2008.

 

DAIRY JUDGING CONTEST RULES

 

1. There will be four dairy cattle classes to judge and one pedigree class.

2. Both Junior and Senior contestants will give one set of oral reasons.

3. Ties will be broken by oral reasons score and cow class scores.

4. Awards will be given in each division.

 

BEEF HEIFER SHOW GENERAL RULES

 

1. All animals must be registered and in the exhibitor’s name in order to show in

the registered division of the show. Entries must be owned by exhibitor by June 1

of the show year and positively identified per breed association requirements.

2. All animals must be halter broken.

3. The maximum number of female entries any exhibitor may show is six.

4. Heifers must have been born between September 1, 2006 and March 1,

2008 to compete in the show. Cow/Calf pairs will be eligible. Calves cannot

be older than 210 days.

5. No bred and owned bull classes will be offered.

6. Breeds must have 5 (five) head in order to have a breed show. If the minimum

of five head cannot be met, breed will show in A.O.B. There will be two A.O.B.

divisions: Percentage and Purebred. Percentage cattle with registration

papers will show in the percentage A.O.B. classification.

 

COMMERCIAL HEIFER DIVISION

 

1. All animals must be permanently identified by legible tattoo or brand and be

in the possession of the exhibitor by June 1 of the show year.

2. Commercial animals can be exhibited in the commercial division only.

3. Classes will be broken by age or the committee of each expo has the right

to show commercial heifers by weight. Any heifer that has been issued a

registration certificate by a purebred breed association is not eligible to show

in the commercial division.

 

BEEF MARKET DIVISION GENERAL RULES

 

1. Individuals may show a maximum of three market animals, with no more

than six total head.

2. Shows will be divided into three divisions (lightweight, mediumweight, heavyweight) with a Champion and Reserve Champion Division winner selected. The Division winners will then show against Champion and Reserve Champion Market Heifer for Grand/Reserve Market Animal.

3. Market Heifers will be treated just like Market Steers. Market Heifers will show by weight. A Champion and Reserve Champion Market Heifer will be selected and then show against the Division Steer winners for Grand/Reserve Market Animal. Market Heifers must be open.

4. Market animals will be shown by weight.

5. No bulls or bullocks will be eligible.

6. All entries must be halter broken. Any animal that is considered by the show committee to be a hazard to exhibitors, spectators, etc. will be excused from the show and will be ineligible for class placement and premiums.

 

HOG SHOW GENERAL RULES

 

1. Registered classes will be offered for market hogs. Registration papers must be brought to weigh-in in order to show in registered classes or they will be shown in the crossbred classes. For all Kentucky Junior Livestock Expos- Bring registration papers when turning in card.

2. Each breed must have five (5) head to have a breed show. If five head cannot be met, hogs can be shown in either White Purebred division or Colored Purebred division.

3. Classes will be determined by breed and weight, divided as equitably as possible among the classes.

4. Barrows and/or gilts are eligible to be shown.

5. Any animal on-foot showing evidence of staginess, incomplete castration, crippling, or disease will be eliminated.

6. Novice Showmanship/Weight Classes: Open to exhibitors who are eight years of age and under as of January 1 of the show year regardless of prior show experience.

Novice exhibitors MUST show his/her own hog and are limited to one entry. The Novice winner is not eligible for the Overall Grand Champion.

7. Swine exhibitors may show a total of 6 pigs.

 

MARKET GOAT SHOW RULES

 

1. Exhibitors may enter market does or wethers. All goats must be clean castrated (banded or surgically removed clamping is not allowed) prior to arrival on the grounds.

2. Horns are optional, but must be tipped. Tipped is defined as having the end of the horn squared off to 1/2 inch in diameter or larger. All tipping must be done prior to arrival on the grounds.

3. All goats are required to have a complete unbroken mouth and kid teeth.  The judge will make the determination.

4. Goat exhibitors may show a total of three (3) goats.

5. Novice Showmanship and Weight Classes. The class is open to exhibitors eight years of age and under as of January 1 of the show year regardless of prior show experience. Novice exhibitors are limited to one entry and MUST show their own goat. The novice winner is not eligible to show in the Overall

Grand Champion class.

 

SHEEP SHOW GENERAL RULES

 

1. Induced cryptorchids, short scrotum lambs and rams lambs may not be shown. Exhibitor must be present during the show.

2. Lambs must be docked and clean castrated, and the animal must be shorn slick above the knee and hock joint (1/4 inch or less) prior to arrival on grounds. All blankets must be removed for inspection.

3. Lambs will show by breed and weight. Classes will be broken at the discretion of the local Expo committee.

4. Exhibitors at all Kentucky Junior Livestock Expos are responsible for declaring their own breed. The Show Committee may reclassify if necessary.

5. There must be eight (8) lambs in order to have a breed show. If eight head cannot be met, lambs will be placed in either White Faced Cross or Black Faced Cross.

6. Lamb exhibitors may show a total of three lambs.

7. Novice Showmanship and Weight Classes. The class is open to exhibitors who are eight years of age and under as of January 1 of the show year regardless of prior show experience. Novice exhibitors are limited to one entry and MUST show their own lamb. The novice winner is not eligible to show in the Overall Grand Champion class.

 

 

 

 

 

 

DAIRY SHOW GENERAL RULES

 

1. All registered animals must be registered in the names of the 4-H Club members or FFA members exhibiting them, and their registration papers must be shown to the superintendent of the show. The transfer of registration or date of ownership, as prescribed by particular breed associations, must be

recorded in the breed office prior to June 1 of the current year. If the registration certificates have not been received from the breed association, a statement from the association that the transfer has been recorded prior to June 1 will be acceptable.

2. All grade animals shown must be the bona fide property of the 4-H Club member or FFA member and part of the member’s program. Certificates of ownership of grade animals must be shown on approved forms and presented at the time of checking in animals. These forms are to be completed prior to arriving at the show. Chain animals may be exhibited by the member who has possession of the animal by June 1 of the current year.

3. Registered and grade animals will be shown in competition with each other within their respective breed classes.

4. No 4-H Club or FFA member will be permitted to show more than six animals.

5. Only female animals will be eligible to show.

6. Cow classes will follow Dairy Showmanship at all Expos.

 

SHOWMANSHIP CLASSES

 

1. Showmanship classes will be divided by age as of Jan. 1, 2008. Classes will be broken at the discretion of the local committee. The winner of each class will compete for the overall champion and reserve champion of each species. The two champions of each species will compete in the round-robin showmanship contest.

2. All 4-H and FFA members must show their own animals.

3. Heifer and steer exhibitors will show together in beef showmanship.

Premiums will be paid in showmanship classes. The scale is as follows:

(1) $30; (2) $25; (3) $22; (4) $20; (5) $18; (6) $15; (7) $12;

8) $10; (9) $8; (10) $7; (11th and below) $5.

 

ROUND ROBIN SHOWMANSHIP CONTEST

 

1. The two overall champion showmen of each species will compete for supreme overall showman at each Kentucky Junior Livestock Expo. In the Round Robin, they will be required to show all species.

2. The champion showman will receive a Montana Silversmith belt buckle and cash award. An exhibitor may only win the Round Robin award one time, per Junior Livestock Expo, per show career.

3. Ties will be broken by the highest score in the exhibitors’ respective species or at the discretion of the committee.

4. All animals entered for exhibition at KJLE’s are eligible to be used in the Round Robin Contest.

COMMISSIONER’S AWARD

 

A Commissioner’s Award (a Montana Silversmith belt buckle and a cash

award) will be presented to an exhibitor in each species. The award is based

on points given for the exhibitor’s performance in showmanship, judging,

and skill-a-thon, and for the exhibitor’s highest placing animal in the

show. One Commissioner’s award will be given per species as follows:

1/4 Skill-a-thon top 10 percent - 10 points.

1/4 showmanship - based on placing in class, with 10

points for first place down to 1 point for tenth place;

1/4 judging - top 10 percent - 10 points.

1/4 placing of animal in show - first place, 10 points.

Results will be calculated by the show committee. Ties will be broken by

highest percent of possible points. A Commissioner’s Buckle may only be

awarded to an exhibitor one time, per species, per year, and only one

Commissioner’s Buckle per show.

DIRECTIONS TO BOWLING GREEN SHOW

 

 FROM INTERSTATE 65: Take Exit 20 onto the William Natcher

Parkway. Take the first Parkway exit (#4) and turn left on Nashville

Road. The Western Kentucky University Farm is on the left. Just

past the farm, turn left on Elrod Road. The entrance to the

Agricultural Exposition Center is the first drive on the left.

FROM WILLIAM NATCHER PARKWAY, traveling east into

Bowling Green: Take the third Bowling Green exit (#4) and turn

right on Nashville Road. The Western Kentucky University Farm is on

the left. Just past the farm, turn left on Elrod Road. The entrance to

the Agricultural Exposition Center is the first drive on the left.
