Campaign urges Kentucky students to 'Eat to Win'
Commissioner Richie Farmer
You’re always in a hurry. If you’re a kid, you’re rushing from class to class, then to practice, then to a friend’s house to (hopefully) study. If you’re a parent, you’re playing taxi service for your kids (who each may have a different place to go), you’re going to work, you’re going to meetings, you’re going to the store.
At some point, you have to squeeze a few minutes in to get a bite to eat. Pressed for time, you pick up a quick bag of fast food or pop a frozen dinner into the microwave. You may feel like that’s your only choice. But is it your best choice?
Recently I launched the Eat to Win campaign to get kids and their parents thinking more about the food our children eat. On the Eat to Win Web site, www.eattowinky.com, you will find information that explains why you need fruits and vegetables in your everyday diet; the importance of buying fresh, local Kentucky Proud foods; the benefits of fruits and vegetables for student-athletes, and much more.
Kids, you, more than anyone else, are in charge of what you eat. And what you eat will go a long way toward determining how healthy, happy and successful you are. I’m convinced that, with some education and a little planning, you can make smart food choices that will help you maximize your performance in the classroom, on the field of play and in the game of life. Eat to Win will help show you the way.
