Blue Grass Stockyards to change Wednesday sales schedule

Kentucky Agriculture Report

Blue Grass Stockyards in Lexington, the largest livestock market east of the Mississippi River and the most important point of price discovery in the cattle market in the eastern United States, is announcing a change in its sale schedule on Wednesdays.

Historically, Wednesday has been a sale day for feeders and the time that stock cows have sold in Lexington. With lower cattle numbers in the service area, the management believes it is in the best interest of the customer to concentrate the business on Mondays and Tuesdays.

"In an ever-changing marketplace, it is important for us to be as efficient as possible for our customers and as a business, and this move helps us focus our resources and people on achieving that objective," said Jim Akers, COO for Blue Grass.

Blue Grass is not abandoning Wednesday sales but refocusing its efforts to better serve the customers. Beginning May 1, Blue Grass will cease the regularly scheduled Wednesday sale. The Internet auctions will continue to be hosted at the Lexington location on the second and fourth Wednesdays at 5 p.m. EDT. On the fourth Wednesday, the Internet sale will be followed by a stock cow sale beginning at 6:30 p.m. CPH-45 sales will be conducted seasonally as announced on Wednesday evenings.

Customers who have typically sold cattle on Wednesdays are encouraged to bring those cattle on Monday or Tuesday.

If you have questions regarding this change or any other issue related to the Blue Grass operation, call David Holt or Jim Akers at (859) 255-7701.
