Kentucky Proud. I had heard about it but didn’t really understand what it meant until I searched the Kentucky Agriculture website. I had no clue that so many products were grown in Kentucky and sold at farmers’ markets all over the state. There are 1,300 Kentucky Proud members selling over 18,000 products. There were 120 farmers’ markets in 2008. That’s awesome!
A member of my own family begins the chain of events that puts fresh milk and pork on many Kentucky tables. My Uncle Scott grows about 200 acres of corn every year and sells it to local farmers who feed it to their dairy cows and hogs. These farmers sell the milk from the dairy cows to local milk companies who package and sell it to grocery stores all over Kentucky. The hogs are sold to a local processing plant where the meat is packaged and sold to consumers in Clay and surrounding counties.

As you can see many Kentucky hands are used to bring products from the field to our table. Just as the farmers are “Kentucky Proud” to bring these products to our tables, I’m just as “Kentucky Proud” to know I’m eating home-grown.
