Poster and Essay Contest Winners Honored

 

Students Submitted Entries on 'Kentucky Farms: Growing Solutions for a Growing World'

 

LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 24, 2019) — Kentucky students were honored for posters and essays that express how Kentucky’s agriculture community is working to address hunger during the annual Poster and Essay Contest awards ceremony Friday at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

“I want to congratulate the winners, who depicted in art and writing how our farmers are helping feed the hungry here in Kentucky and around the world,” Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles said.

The theme for the contest was “Kentucky Farms: Growing Solutions for a Growing World.” Each winner received a $100 check from Kentucky Agriculture and Environment in the Classroom (KyAEC), a meal featuring foods from Kentucky Proud producers, and tickets to the Lexington Legends baseball game against the Greenville (South Carolina) Drive.

Essay winners with their hometowns, schools, and teachers were:

Grade 2 – Avery Bivens, Hodgenville, Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, Stefanie Bryan

Grade 5 – Karin Ingalls, Rineyville, Castle Hill Academy Homeschool, Jody Ingalls

Grade 6 – Hayden Fletcher, Irvine, Estill County Middle School, Mike Flynn

Grade 7 – Kailey Marroquin, Murray, Calloway County Middle School, Jeanetta McCallon

Grade 8 (tie) – Kadyn Murray, Magnolia, FAITH Academics Homeschool Co-op, Amy Moore and Joy Murray; and Luke Williams, Irvine, Estill County Middle School, Mike Flynn

Grade 9 – Colin Ingalls, Rineyville, Castle Hill Academy Homeschool, Jody Ingalls

Grade 10 – Suzannah Kirkman, Vine Grove, Kirkman Christian Academy, Margaret Kirkman

Grade 11 (tie) – Caroline Kirkman, Vine Grove, Kirkman Christian Academy, Margaret Kirkman; and Bill Lafollette, New Haven, LaRue County High School, Misty Bivens

Grade 12 – Emma Ingalls, Rineyville, Castle Hill Academy Homeschool, Jody Ingalls

Avery Sluss of Krypton, a student at Hindman Elementary School, was honored as the Kentucky winner of the Bonnie Plants Third Grade Cabbage Program. Avery’s cabbage weighed 10 pounds.

The Poster and Essay Contest is sponsored by KyAEC, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, and the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund through the Kentucky Proud program.
